Pre-Congress Workshop: “Advancing Research Literacy”
Separate registration required, a $200 additional fee applies.
Organizers: Ather Ali, Rita Benn, Laura Lee Johnson, Peter Kozel, and Samantha Simmons
Description: The purpose of this full-day workshop is to increase research literacy in integrative medicine and healthcare in new investigators, including students (graduate and undergraduate) at conventional or CAM schools, residents, fellows, K-awardees and junior faculty within five years of their initial appointment. Others are welcome to attend, but the former will receive priority. The session will build on participants' basic knowledge of research methods to improve their understanding of developing a theoretically sound and viable research study which takes into account specific issues unique to complementary and alternative therapies and integrative care. The morning session will provide participants with conceptual and practical information for formulating their research study questions, and applying appropriate study designs, methodology and measurement tools to this process. In the afternoon, participants will have the opportunity to participate in a mock NIH grant review session and gain information about the criteria and process for how NCCAM grant applications are reviewed and funded.
